We live in a hectic world but I spent a glorious three hours with the Association for Coaching West Kent Co-coaching group recently. It’s our regular meeting of coaching peers where we explore new themes, practice our skills and forms an essential CPD for AfC members.
This time the topic evolved to talking about how we (as in you) make space for ourselves, whether we allow things to emerge or whether we are focused always on ‘doing’. A question arose and I wonder now how this sits with you? What does ‘letting things emerge’ mean for you? It’s a question I tussled with as in the past (like many others today I’m sure) I’d been subject to having to ‘perform’, to reach targets, to be accountable, to manage others in ensuring they ‘performed’. ‘Letting things emerge’ seems inimical to that. It’s a passive phrase when working in an organisation where outputs and targets dominate, people are by default anything but passive. But then… …then I started to think about what happens when we’re not busy, when we create space. In a Thinking Environment we do precisely that, we pay attention, allow for each thought being as equal as the next so there’s no competition thus allowing our brains to explore. We consider assumptions and scenarios: we allow things to emerge. Being at ease in that way, ‘letting things emerge’ now becomes the opposite of passivity. It is an energetic, thought-provoking process allowing creativity to overcome blockages to action and success. Take a look at that question again. What does ‘letting things emerge’ mean for you? What resonates for you now I wonder? To discover more about how to gain space to let things emerge, get in touch.
