This is a great story.
The road repair gangs walked along the mountain roads picking up stones and throwing them into the dustbins strapped on their backs. As the hours passed the dustbins grew heavier and their backs bent lower. Soon their spines became so used to the load that they could not stand up straight. "That's good", they said, "we only look down and it makes the job easier."
They continued walking the mountain road picking up stones and throwing them into their dustbins. They took no notice of the sun as it cast shadows behind them. But then one day Sam wondered what the sun would look like as it set behind the mountains. He tried to look up but the dustbin was too heavy. He tried again the next day with no success but then Sam thought, “What would happen if I emptied my dustbin just here.” And so he did, carefully piling the stones away from his road. He eased his spine and could stand slightly taller. The last rays of the sun were breathtaking. The following day he did the same and the next until he could stand upright and see the full sunset.
Three weeks later a gang came across piles of stones alongside their road. "I heard that Sam's further up the road than us," said one. "I was told he'd reached the mountain top," sighed another. "I'd so like to do that one day," he added. And then they carried on with their bent backs, slowly picking up stones and placing them in their dustbins.
